The daylight hours are slowly increasing and with that the temperatures are sure to start climbing soon too. Before long there will be an abundance of natural food swimming around in most lakes and the carp are sure to take full advantage of this and so should you. Spring has always been a good time of year to fish Zig rigs, although this method has only really been brought to light in recent years. For those of you who don’t understand the principle of Zig rigs, they are generally small bouyant hookbaits fished mid water to imitate a natural food source. The small hookbait could be anything from a small piece of foam or cork to a custom made imitation bug or fly and can be any colour or colour combination, although personally I favour yellow or a natural colour such as that of cork. There’s a wide range hookbaits made for Zig fishing, such as the Nash Zig Bugs, Avid Carp Zig Lites and Gardner Zig Rig Foam all of which provide you with a variety of hookbait options.

Zig rig hooklinks are usually light mono hooklinks tied up with something like Korda’s Kruiser Control Mono or Drennan Double Strength. The lighter the breaking strain or lower the diameter the better as a less obtrusive hooklink will get you more bites. The same rule applys to hooks as well, the smaller the hook the better. Although thick weed, snags and other obstacles need to be taken into consideration when choosing hooks and hooklinks as theres no point hooking fish if you are going to keep losing them. The Korda Mixa Hooks or the Drennan Super Specialist Barbel Hooks are both good examples of a good, strong zig hook.

The next thing to take a look at is your lead setup, I prefer a simple leadclip with no rig tubing or tail rubber to ensure the lead is dropped on the take. A large lead swinging around on a long hooklink is a recipe for disaster. Anti Tangle Sleeves such as those from Korda are also vital to help cut down on tangles. Some Pva Tape like Korda’s Woven PVA Tape will help secure the lead in place for the cast.

Once you have all the tackle required to tie up your zigs you need to get out on bank and give them a go. The depths you fish your zigs at is entirely upto you, although its worth varying the depths over your rods to cover as many depths as possible until you get a take and find the depth the fish are sitting at. The Gardner Rig Bin and Gardner Mini Rig Bin are ideal for preparing a range of zigs at home so they are ready to use when your on the bank, saving you having long lengths of mono all over your swim.

Here’s a nice Zig caught Mirror I had on a small piece of cork on a 10ft zig in 12ft of water.

Zig rigs or Zigs as they are more commonly called can be a very effective method of angling when the carp are up in the water and not interested in feeding on the bottom. Here is a Zig caught 25lb14oz mirror from last week that was caught 2ft under the surface in 12ft of water on a hot day when the carp could be seen sitting under the surface soaking up a bit of sunshine. The fish was caught using Drennan Super Specialist Barbel Hooks and a small artificial bait.

Step 1

Step 1

Thread your choosen bait onto the hair.

Step 2

Now attach the Sight Stop to the hair loop via the hook on the underside of the stop.

Step 3

Pull the stop into the bait and you are now ready to go.

This is a simple surface rig that will compliment the Korda Surface Controllers or any other surface set up.

To tie this rig you will need some Korda Cruiser Control Surface Line, Korda Mixa Hooks, some Enterprise Imitation Dog Biscuits and a Korda Size 11 Ring Swivel.

Step 1.

Remove about 3-4 foot of Korda Kruiser Control Surface Line and tie a small loop knot in one end.

Step 2.

Now thread on an Enterprise Imitation Dog Biscuit. Place one of the supplied shot in the hair loop and pinch in place, then pull it tightly into the recess in the biscuit.

Step 3.

Pass the other end of the line through the back of the eye of the Korda Mixa hook and position it below the bait. Then hook the imitation mixer on the side opposite the shot.

Step 4.

Whip the line up the shank of the hook 6 times making sure the first whip goes away from the join in the eye.

Step 5.

Now whip the line once back down the shank of the hook.

Step 6.

Pass the line through the back of the eye again and moisten before tightening down gently.

Step 7.

Now slide the hook round further so the shank is inside the imitation dog biscuit with the point of the hook free to get a hook hold.

Step 8.

Tie the other end of the hooklink to a size 11 ring swivel using a palomar knot. Double over the end of the hooklink and pass it though the big eye of the swivel.

Step 9.

Now form an overhand knot in the doubled over section of the hooklink around the swivel.

Step 10.

Pass the swivel through the loop in the end of the hooklink which was made when the overhand knot was formed.

Step 11.

Moisten the knot and tighten it down gently before trimming the tag end.

The rig is now ready to be attached to your surface setup and cast out.

The Atomic Tackle Maggot Rig uses the inline lead setup fished helicopter style allowing a large PVA stocking of maggots to be tied to the swivel at the base of the lead. This enables the hook to be secured to the PVA stocking so once cast out the PVA bag will melt leaving your maggot hookbait lying in amongst the other maggots.

For the purpose of the demonstration I used a Gardner Readymade Mag Aligner Rig.

Step 1.

Pull out the large ring swivel from the base of the lead.

Step 2.

Now thread your mainline through the lead. ( If using leadcore or a leader, you will need to splice or loop the swivel on)

Step 3.

Tie your mainline to the swivel, I would suggest a palomar knot. To tie a palomar knot double over your mainline and pass it through the eye of your swivel.

Then tie an overhand knot with the doubled over mainline.

Now pass the swivel through the loop made by the overhand knot.

Then moisten the knot, slowly tighten it down and trim the tag end.

Step 4.

Once the knot is tied pull the swivel into the insert in the base of the lead.

Step 5.

Now you need to either tie your rig to the swivel above the lead. If the rig has a loop in the end pass the loop through the swivel before passing the hookend of the rig through the loop and tightening as I’ve done in this demonstration.

The finished rig should look like this.

The large ring at the base of the lead is for the PVA mesh bag to be tied to, then all you need to do is push the hook through the PVA mesh to secure it for casting.

Another single hookbait which could be utilised well in the winter is artificial baits, preferably the flavoured or high-viz variety as they need some attraction to them. The Enterprise Artificial Boilies 10mm , the Niteglow Eternal Boilies and the Solar Everlasting Hookbaits are all top artificial baits that will work well as single hookbaits. Don’t discount artificial sweetcorn as a single winter bait either the ever popular Enterprise range or the new Cotswold Bait Creations Soft Floating Corn. Imitation baits are resistant to nuisance fish, won’t lose bouyancy, go soft or lose attraction.
