Another 30lb common!

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

A recent trip to one of my syndicates saw me bank another 30lb common known as the ‘Elusive Common’ at 33lb 2oz. The fish fell to a corkball pop up fished on a Chod Rig consisting of an ESP Stiff Rigger Hook, Gardner Tripwire and 9 ft of ESP Original Camo Leadcore.

The fish was backed up with a small stocky and a lovely dark 25lb mirror.

Scar For Adam

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Customer Adam Holmes has had the big one out of his local lake. Here’s what Adam had to say :-

“Just thought i would sent these pics of the big un out my local lake J&S in Rearsby Leicester.

Caught it a couple of weeks ago at 5am sat morning after having nothing all night on my chod rig but a couple on my other rod i decided to reel in at 3.30am just before bite time.
I changed the rig totally to an inline drop off lead of 3.5oz tied to a 12inch hybrid soft weed green hook link and size 6 Korda Wide Gape Hook fished blowback style.
This was then fished just off the marginal weed at 10yrds range on a soft silt bed fished over a scattering of bait.

I watched Scar roll and fizz over my bait ( NV baits 3FM ) for just over an hour before my right hand rod ripped off, after a good 10min fight he was hitting the spreader block “
Well done Adam
John

Result For Ben

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

A nice result for Ben recently with this 29lb 4oz mirror carp from Wellingborough Lakes. Ben was using Mainline Activ-8  boilies scattered over a wide area. Fishing to a silty area Ben used a chod rig tied with a size 5 ESP Stiff Rigger  hook on a readymade Ace Hard On Camo Leadcore Helicopter/Chod Rigs . Well done Ben.

3 Turn Blood Knot

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

The Three Turn Blood Knot is commonly used when tying up a chod rig using ESP Stiff Rig Bristle Filament . Because the bristle filament is so thick and stiff most other knots are just too difficult too tie. Ordinarily I would not recommend a blood knot as it is a strangulation knot, but for this purpose I and many others find it more than adequate. It is also handy because it is quite easy to set the length of your chod rig with this knot. The Three Turn Blood Knot is tied to the ring swivel of the chod rig. In this demonstation I am using size 9 ESP Uni-Link Carp Swivels. Ok, on with the demonstration.

Step 1

Thread your stiff rig filament through the uni-link swivel

Step 2

Loop the bristle filament round the uni-link swivel

Step 3

Holding the uni-link swivel and the loop whip the tag end around the main hooklink going away from the swivel do this three times.

Regular customer Scott had a nice result recently. Fishing an afternoon session at a local lake Scott had two doubles, the biggest of which was a 16lb 6oz common(shown below). Scott caught his fish using a chod rig constructed from ESP Bulk Spool Leadcore  in choddy silt and the new  ESP Curve Shanx Carp Hook  . Well done Scott!

How To Tie The Domhoff/Dumhoff Knot

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

The Domhoff/Dumhoff Knot is a whipping knot traditionally used to attach line to spade end hooks. However more recently it has become very popular in tying The Chod Rig and The Hinged Stiff Rig. These two rigs are normally tied using hooks with an out turned eye some good examples are, the ESP Stiff Rigger MK2  , The Korda Choddy Hook and the Gardner D-Ceptor Carp Hook.

Step 1

Form a loop in your hooklink material

Step 2

Lay the loop against your hook and grip firmly

Step 3

Wind the hooklink once round the hook away from the join in the hooks eye

Step 4

Grip the turn with your opposite hand and continue winding the line round the shank of the hook towards the point. Do as many turns as is necessary, at least five.

Step 5

Pass the end of the hooklink that you have been winding round the hookshank through the loop created in step 2.

Step 6

Lubricate the turns with saliva and pull the two ends of the hooklink.

Step 7

Trim the tag end.

Step 8

Finally bed the knot down to the eye and you’re done.

That’s it, hopefully you will now be able to add the Domhoff/Dumhoff Knot to your carp fishing armoury.

Best fishes,

John
