The Claw rig is a very effective bottom bait rig. With no shrink tube or rigs rings its also very simple to tie.

For the purpose of this demonstration I used the Korda Hybrid Stiff Coated Braid, a Korda Kurv Shank  Hook and a 3mm length of the Korda Silicone Tubing.

Step 1.

Remove roughly 4 inches of coating from the Korda Hybrid stiff hooklink and tie a small overhand loop in the stripped end.

Step 2.

Now thread a 3mm section of Silicone tubing onto the hooklink.

Step 3.

Then pass the hook point through the silicone tubing towards the loop tied in step 1. Make sure not the snag the hookpoint in the braid on the way through as this could damage the hooklink.

Step 4.

Thread the hooklink through the back of the eye and then thread your choosen hookbait onto the hair and secure it with a bait stop. Set the hair with about a 1cm gap between the hookbait and hook.

Step 5.

Now whip the hooklink up the shank of the hook 6 times before passing it through the back of the eye to create a knotless knot. 

Step 6.

Next thread two of the small Korda Sinkers onto the hooklink. It is easier the strip a small amount of coating off the end of hooklink as the coating makes it too thick to get the sinkers on.

Step 7.

Tie a figure of eight knot in the end of the hooklink.

Double over the end of the hooklink and create a loop like so….

Then pass the end of the doubled over loop through the loop just created….

And again….

Moisten the knot and pull it tight.

Step 8.

Position the Korda Sinkers evenly apart along the hooklink and gently steam it straight over a kettle.

The rig is now ready to be attached to your lead setup and cast out.

Due to the stiffness and nature of this rig it is best fished over firm/hard lakes beds.

There have been a few instances in the media recently where The Multi Rig has been referred to as The Johnny Mac Rig . This is because Jon Macallister has used the rig to good effect, catching some of our most desirable carp. Though he uses it almost exclusively for his fishing, Jon makes no claim to the “invention” of the rig. That honour goes to Mike Kavanagh who also brought us The Stiff Rig . The beauty of the multi rig is that you can change your hook quickly without having to tie a new hooklink. The following step by step guide shows you how tie the Multi Rig.

These are the components that I used to tie the rig.

Step 1

To tie the Multi Rig it is best to use a coated braid in this instance I am using Sufix Camfusion

Step 2

Cut a length of the Camfusion and tie a figure of eight loop knot (see previous blog). The loop should be approximately 45mm long.

Step 2

Thread the loop through the Gardner Longshank Incizor hook

Step 3

Thread one of the small Korda  rig rings onto the hookshank. The rig ring on the shank of the hook is to prevent the hooklink catching and possibly parting in the join in the eye of the hook.

Step 4

Thread one of the Rigmarole 4mm Rig Rings  onto the loop

Step 5

Thread the hookpoint through the loop

Step 6

Tie a size 8 swivel to the other end of the hooklink with a figure of eight loop knot, moisten and bed down

Step 7

Position the D on the hookshank. A good starting place is midway between the hookpoint and the barb

Thread on a pop up of your choice, put some tungsten putty on the knot and you’re done.

The idea behind the Blowback rig is that a fish can’t eject the hook, as the bait will move back down the shank on the ring leaving the hook free to grab hold without the fish being able to use the weight of the bait to blow the hook out.

The components used for this rig are a Korda Longshank X Hook, a Korda Rig Ring, Clear Korda Shrink Tubing and Korda Hybrid Fluorocarbon Coated Braid.

Step 1.

Cut around 12 inches of Hybrid of the spool, strip about 4 inches of the coating off and tie a small loop in the end. (See picture below)

Step 2.

Now thread the rig ring onto the hooklink a tie it below the hair stop loop with an over hand knot so it will sit at the top of the shank with enough room for your choosen hookbait. (See picture below)

Step 3.

Thread the point of the hook through the rig ring, then thread the hooklink through the back of the eye and hold the rig ring in position at the top of the shank. Now tie the hook to the hooklink with a knotless knot. (See picture below)

Step 4.

Cut a small piece of the shrink tubing and thread it up the hooklink so it sits covering the knotless knot and leaves around 6mm below the eye of the hook, then steam it gently with a slight bend to help the hook turn. (See picture below)

Step 5.

Finish the rig with a figure of eight knot and trim the excess off. (See picture below)

Step 6.

Now steam the rig gently or pin it on a rig board to straighten the coated braid out but be careful not to pin it down too tight of it will straighten the shrink tubing.

The finished rig should look like this.
